Success Stories

These former shelter pets now enjoy lives full of love and comfort, all thanks to PAWS adopters and foster parents who gave them a chance. Every cat and dog at PAWS is a success story waiting to happen: please visit www.phillypaws.org/adopt to meet yours!

Have your own success story to share? It means so much to see our former residents enjoying their new lives. Send your PAWS dog or cat's photo and story to success@phillypaws.org to be included in the list!

Success Story: TankTank is living the good life! This handsome senior pit bull mix was skin and bones when he first came to the shelter. He now lives in the suburbs and is a kid's best friend! Tank's original owners surrendered him to Philadelphia's animal control shelter because they did not want him. His adopter says: "I never met a more gentle, loving, and sweet old soul. We are thankful every day that he is a part of our family."
Success Story: FranklinFranklin was found living outside at just four weeks old. He was taken to the city shelter, where he was rescued by PAWS and placed into foster care. This playful kitten found his permanent home a few weeks later and now lives comfortably in Center City. His adopters report that he is adapting well to his new home!
Success Story: BenjiBenji, a 1-2 year old papillon mix, was surrendered to the city shelter by his original owners because they were allergic to him. He was rescued by PAWS and now lives in Kensington with two doting parents who describe him as "sweet, loving, lovable, adorable, persistent, and sometimes sneaky." What a dog!
Success Story: SmokeyAfter spending two years in the shelter, Smokey has earned the right to live her golden years in comfort. She was surrendered to the shelter at over 10 years old  because her owners were moving. She languished at the shelter longer than any other animal in PAWS' history. She finally left the shelter when a wonderful PAWS volunteer took her into foster care, and was soon adopted by a loving family in Langhorne. All this sweet senior cat wanted was some love and a little peace and quiet, and she finally found it.

Kali"We have absolutely loved every second of having Kali as part of our family. She loves traveling to the shore with us during the summer to swim in the bay and catch some sun out back. She has also joined us for ski trips to Vermont where we loved watching her jump through the snow! She has been such a joy and pleasure to have, so much so that we are in the proces of fostering other dogs from PAWS! Thanks so much for saving this great girl and allowing us to enjoy such a wonderful dog!"

Athena"Athena took my heart at first meeting. I'm a single gal living in a 9th floor studio in center city. I love her so much! When I come home she is so excited to see me. She runs back and fotth talking the whole time! She has the cutest personality ever. The people at PAWS are awesome! They are very helpful and informative. They answered all my questions and concerns. I cannot imagine living without my little calico! If you are thinking of adopting, I strongly recommend going to PAWS!"

Norton and VincentNorton and Vincent, lookalike brothers with night-and-day personalities, found a happy home together where they spend each day romping and wrestling. They were rescued from Philadelphia's animal control shelter as kittens and grew up in a PAWS foster home. Read their story here

Success Story: Chicken Dumpling

On Valentine's Day 2011, Chicken Dumpling found her true love! Once a homeless stray, this playful girl is now living every dog's dream: she has a new home on a farm in the country with a family who adores her. She even has a canine sibling to play with! Chicken waited for months in the shelter and in foster care, eventually becoming PAWS' longest-term canine resident. She never gave up her search, and now she enjoys all the love that she deserves.
Success Story: PenguinPenguin waited for almost a year at the adoption center for a home of his own, constantly overlooked despite his wonderful personality. He found his home in February 2011 and now lives happily in Bella Vista with a PAWS volunteer, a veterinarian, several cats, and a rabbit!

Success Story: Barney Barney's days as a homeless stray are long behind him! This sweet, gentle dog came to the city shelter after he was found wandering the streets. Like many animals at the shelter, foster care was his only chance at survival. After a brief stint in a PAWS foster home, he was adopted by a veterinary student who calls him "the most loving and loyal dog I have ever had." Barney easily passed his test to become a Certified Therapy Dog, and now makes frequent visits to the Ronald McDonald House to provide comfort to young patients and their families.

Success Story: ClaraClara, a former stray, found a happy home in Willow Grove after her new family saw her photo and description posted on Facebook. PAWS took in Clara after a volunteer found her wandering the streets in North Philadelphia. She was terrified at the shelter, but once her new family took her home, she blossomed into a happy house cat.
Success Story: NalaNala was surrendered to the city shelter by her first owners because they were moving. She came to PAWS, where she found her forever home in 2009. Her adopter says: "I just cannot imagine life without her. She's the sweetest dog ever. My entire family loves her, even my 90 year old grandparents who before only thought of pit bulls as fighting dogs. She makes our lives complete."
Sam"I adopted my cat from PAWS last August. His name in the shelter was "Snap." Since adopting him, we've changed his name to Sam, after Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings, because he's become my faithful companion! He is so affectionate, loves to cuddle, is friendly and welcoming to strangers, and has been such a joy to have around the house! Thank you so much for helping me meet my best friend!
Success Story: Wall-EWhen Wall-E's original owners moved away, he was left to fend for himself in an empty house. He somehow got inside the wall, where he was stuck for an entire month. When a kind neighbor coaxed him out and brought him to the shelter, he was thin and sick, but in good spirits. PAWS took him in and placed him at our Adoption Center, where he stayed until he found a home. This time, when his family moved (all the way to Wisconsin!), Wall-E got his own spot in the car!
