PAWS, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, is a 501(c)3, donor-funded division of the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Association (PACCA), the City of Philadelphia’s contracted animal control shelter. PAWS is dedicated to promoting public welfare and to saving the lives of Philadelphia’s homeless, abandoned and unwanted animals. Receiving the highest volume of unwanted and unloved animals in the region, approximately 30,000 each year, PAWS is working to end the killing of healthy and treatable pets in the City of Philadelphia.

Historically known for extremely high euthanasia rates, PACCA was once a place where only about 10% of the animals made it back out alive. However, since 2005 when new leadership was brought in and PAWS, the lifesaving division of PACCA, was established, our “save rate” has climbed dramatically and steadily. By the end of 2007, PAWS was saving 60% of the animals who entered our shelter. We will not stop until every healthy and treatable pet in Philadelphia is guaranteed a home.

There are many ways that you can support PAWS and help save the lives of homeless animals!

DONATE:
All financial support for PAWS is used to fund lifesaving activities: adoption and foster care, spay/neuter clinics, low-cost vaccinations, and other community-based programs. These efforts are part of PAWS’ greater endeavor of making Philadelphia a city in which every heathy and treatable pet is guaranteed a home and ultimately returning the City of Brotherly Love to its roots of care and compassion by ending the use of euthanasia as a means of population control for savable pets.

SUPPORT SPECIAL NEEDS ANIMALS:
At PAWS we feel a sense of sadness every time we see an animal named Lucky come into the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control shelter. The name just doesn't seem to fit unless there can be a happy ending to that animal's story. The Lucky Fund was established to help ensure that happy endings will be made for many of the animals who arrive at the shelter with treatable medical conditions. Your donations to the Lucky Fund are allocated exclusively to pay for medical treatments such as diagnostic tests, medications and care needed for sick and injured animals. Click here to make a donation to the Lucky Fund online. Just type "Lucky Fund" in the designation box.

Hope, the very first beneficiary of the Lucky Fund, arrived at the shelter in horrible condition. She simply hid her head in fear and pain when she was approached. Hope's care included having radiographs taken at a veterinary office where the first opinion was that she should be euthanized. A second veterinary opinion disagreed and we were determined to find a happy ending for Hope! Hope's final diagnosis included demodectic mange, a fractured pelvis, an imbedded collar and it was also discovered she had been shot by a BB gun as BB's were seen in her flank on the xrays. Hope's treatment would be long but simple. No operation was recommended, only rest and medications. Hope was featured by Carol Erickson on CBS3 and is now living her happy ending with a foster parent who saw her story in the news.
